Cosmetic Dentistry

People who were born with perfect smiles, and who were able to maintain them through adulthood, are few and far between. As you age, your teeth can become susceptible to damage like chipping, discoloration, and misalignment. Fortunately, there are cosmetic dentistry procedures available that can correct a wide range of defects.

The type of cosmetic procedure you require will depend on the nature and extent of the problem. Badly damaged teeth could require crowns, or perhaps inlays and onlays. Minor chipping can be corrected using dental bonding or porcelain veneers. If your teeth are stained or yellowed, chances are you can get the smile you want with just a whitening treatment. At Martin Dentistry in Stockton, CA, we offer the following procedures.

Teeth that are not so badly damaged as to require crowns can often be corrected using dental bonding. Provided that two-thirds of the tooth is intact, bonding can restore function and also appearance. In this sense, it is both a restorative and a cosmetic treatment. Purely cosmetically, bonding can also be used to correct discoloration or slight gapping.

Bonding is a fast, easy treatment. Your cosmetic dentist simply roughens up your tooth a bit with an acid etch. This cleans away dirt while at the same time opening up microscopic holes that allow the bonding material to adhere. This material is colored to match the rest of the tooth, and then shaped, cured and polished. In little time, and at relatively little expense, you will have your smile back. The only disadvantage is that bonding does not last as long as other treatments, but you should get at least five years. Then the procedure may have to be repeated.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are also restorative as well as cosmetic. They will fix mild to moderate imperfections, and can be a less expensive alternative to crowns. This type of restoration is made from composite resin, which is the same color as the rest of your teeth.

Inlays and onlays are most commonly used to replace old metal fillings, or to correct chipping and cracking. The difference between the two is that while inlays are installed on the cusps of your teeth, onlays are placed over several cusps in sequence.

cosmetic dentistry inlays and onlaysTo have your inlays or onlays made, we prepare the teeth, and then create a set of impressions that we send to a lab where the inlays and onlays are made. Once they are made and delivered, we will get in touch with you to arrange to have them cemented in place. Then, all you will need to do is brush and floss regularly and see us for checkups and cleanings to ensure that your restorations will last a long time.

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are shells created from dental ceramic that fit over the front of your teeth. They are a partial restoration, since they do not completely cover the teeth. They are ideal for correcting minor misalignments, discoloration, gummy smiles and gapping, and they are far less costly than full restorations like dental crowns.
