A missing tooth or two in the back might not bother you much appearance-wise, although they should still be replaced to prevent bone loss in your jaw. A lot of missing teeth, though, are going to make it difficult for you to bite and chew effectively, and you should definitely take steps to do something about the problem. If for whatever reason you do not want to consider dental implants or bridge work, then you could be a candidate for dentures.

Are Dentures a Good Choice?

It depends. At Martin Dentistry in Stockton, CA, we prefer dental implants when it comes to replacing missing teeth. However, we understand that not everyone likes the idea of having something surgically implanted in their mouth, and also, not everyone’s budget allows for implants. A bridge would be our next choice, but if you think you might lose even more teeth in the near future, a bridge may not be your best option. You could very well be a better candidate for dentures.

Types of Dentures

Once you and your dentist have determined that you are a candidate for dentures, the next step is to decide the type of denture that is best for you. If you have several teeth remaining, a partial denture could be the best choice. If most or all of your teeth are missing, you would be a better candidate for full dentures.

Again, as suggested above, you also want to consider when you are likely to lose more teeth. If genetics is not on your side (meaning that if one or both of your parents was very prone to tooth decay and lost their teeth in short order), a partial denture is not going to be the best choice because every time you lose another tooth, your denture will need to be modified, and that can quickly become very expensive. Sometimes it is simply better to have your remaining teeth taken out and be fitted for a full set of dentures.

Making the Decision

It is never easy making the decision to live with dentures. The good news is, though, that modern dentures are very comfortable, and not prone to slipping or sliding the way your grandparents’ dentures might have. Your dentist can help you to determine if you are a good candidate for dentures, or if other options might suit you better.
