Teeth Whitening Aftercare
To get the maximum benefit from your teeth whitening, aftercare is important. This is because the pores of your tooth enamel stay open for 24-48 hours following the procedure
The First Two Days
Teeth whitening aftercare for the first 48 hours is a bit restrictive, but once the pores have closed up, you can basically go back to your normal routine. Begin your teeth whitening aftercare by avoiding non-alcoholic beverages other than milk, water and sparkling water. If you wish to enjoy an alcoholic drink, you should restrict yourself to vodka, gin or white wine.
As to food, the general rule of thumb is that if a food is white, you can eat it. If it is any color other than white, you should avoid it. The only real exception to this rule would be that you can have bananas. If you want to enjoy a potato, it has to be peeled.
For the first 48 hours, you should also avoid liquids that are very hot or very cold, and you should not smoke.
Your whitening treatment can last you a very long time if you eliminate, or at least cut back on, the substances that caused your teeth to become discolored in the first place. The biggest culprits are coffee, tea, cola beverages and red wine. Smoking is, of course, a very bad habit, and if you have managed not to smoke for 48 hours, you are already well on your way to quitting, so why not keep going?
The use of a maintenance product like a whitening toothpaste or mouthwash is also useful for teeth whitening aftercare.
